Local
Information
Many people regard Lagos as the best town in the Algarve. Not as popular with early tourists because of the distance from Faro Airport along old and busy roads, it has remained largely unspoiled and retained its character. Now that the motorway link is complete, it is about 45 minutes only from the airport, but local planners are determined to ensure that it does not become over-developed. Lagos is well served for shopping, with many local craft shops in the main town shopping centre, and three larger modern supermarkets around the outskirts. There is a huge choice of restaurants, including Indian and Chinese, in the town centre, but for the real character of the area why not venture away from town, and look for the smaller bar/restaurants the usual tip is to look where the locals go. The nearest beach is Meia Praia, one of the largest beaches along the whole of the Algarve, which even in the peak summer months is relatively un-crowded, with parking also easy. Motor Racing Comes to the Algarve The new Autodromo do Algarve is now complete, and is around 10 minutes by car from the villa. This has been built during 2008 and opened on 2nd November with its first event, the final round of the World Superbikes, which included a visit to the circuit by Michael Schumacher. It is considered to be one of the worlds most challenging circuits, and is a truly world-class venue. As well as the circuit itself, it will shortly have a Go-Karting track added - at 1300m one of the longest in Europe - plus there will be a full sports centre based there. Visit the website, www.autodromodoalgarve.com for full details. The circuit is fully FIA approved, and is set to become the winter testing circuit of choice for the Formula 1 teams, with longer sunshine hours per year than anything else on offer in Europe. Honda, Ferrari and McLaren kick off the testing for 3 days in December 2008, but it is not just cars that will test there - the bikes are coming too, with the launch of the World Superbike and Supersport Championship being officially launched at the circuit on January 22nd, followed by 3 days of official testing, with all of the teams in attendance. 2009 confirmed races include the A1GP in April and the Le Mans series in August.
